Professor Shakib is one of the leading Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in the UK. Working in a field covering specialist treatment for the mouth, jaw, neck, or face, critical areas for function and appearance.
A personal area of medicine, where Professor Shakib’s ability to build relationships with patients is valuable. As is his extensive experience in maxillofacial surgery, for those he treats and for his profession.
Involvement in research over two decades has seen Professor Shakib receive a number of awards, including twice winning the Paul Toller Research Prize, from the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues is important to him. He is a teacher and mentor for trainee specialists, a presenter at medical conferences and has published a number of papers in scientific journals.
Professor Shakib’s own studies began with graduating as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1993. In 1996, he was awarded a fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow.
His fellowship continued at the Royal College of Surgeons in England, followed by studying pre-clinical medicine, at the Royal Free Hospital.
In 1998, he was selected for the prestigious PhD program at UCL. Becoming a Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Medicine in 2002, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Distinction in 2003.
Professor Shakib was awarded membership of The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006 and a Specialist Fellowship in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 2010. He has served as an examiner at the RCS since that time.
Throughout his career, ensuring patients are well served has been the focus. This includes treating people requiring dental implants, bone augmentation, gland treatment and micro-vascular surgery.
Advanced treatment has been a key part of his work. From skin cancer surgery, to life changing support for patients with facial, or jaw deformity and others in need of facial reconstruction.
Dual qualification in medicine and dentistry is unusual, reaching the stage of being on the specialist register with both The General Medical Council (GMC) and the General Dental Council (GDC) is quite rare.
As an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Professor Shakib has few peers. Being asked to review journals and share his skills are a natural result but using his skills to help people will always be Professor Shakib’s first wish.
