Diagnosis and Treatment for Younger Patients
Treatment begins with a thorough and thoughtful diagnosis. Our experienced specialists take the time to listen, not just to our young patients, but also to parents, carers, and anyone supporting them.
When we need to take scans or images of a child’s face or jaw, we always take extra care. Using the latest equipment helps keep radiation exposure low and gives us the detailed images we need to plan safe, effective treatment.
In children, it’s common to see teeth that haven’t yet come through (unerupted), or are growing in the wrong place (impacted). Sometimes a tooth can even become fused to the bone, a condition called ankylosis. We carefully assess how the jaw is developing, and how this might affect the position of the teeth and a child’s overall oral health.
Ankylosis may be linked to infection, which is more common in children, especially in the jaw, an area that is more porous during early growth. Spotting and treating these infections early is important.
As children grow, adult teeth, including wisdom teeth in teenagers, often sit hidden in the jaw. Knowing how these teeth are likely to come through helps us guide treatment and monitor development at each stage.
Some children are born with extra teeth (supernumerary teeth), or may be missing certain teeth altogether.
These situations are more common than many people realise, and treating them often involves both orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons working together to create the best outcome.
By treating these issues early, we can help prevent bigger problems later on, like cysts or damage to nearby teeth. It’s all part of helping your child grow up with healthy teeth, a well-developed jaw, and a confident smile.
