Understanding Trigeminal Neuralgia

The trigeminal nerve is a complex network of roots and branches that extends across much of the face, transmitting sensory signals to the brain. However, this system can sometimes malfunction, leading to severe pain.

Each year, approximately 1 in 10,000 people in the UK develop trigeminal nerve disorder (TND). This condition causes intense, burning facial pain, often likened to an electric shock, which can reach extreme levels.

There is no single known trigger for TND. It can occur spontaneously or be brought on by everyday activities such as shaving, eating, drinking, applying makeup, smiling, or even environmental factors.

While more common in later life, TND can affect individuals of any age. The pain typically occurs on one side of the face but can also impact both sides, as well as the jaw, mouth, eyes, or forehead.

Symptoms range from brief spasms to intermittent or prolonged episodes of pain. In nearly all cases, specialist medical support is essential for effective management.
