What Is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery) is used to reposition the jaw, often to correct an imbalance between the upper and lower jaw, improving function in chewing, speaking and breathing, and appearance.

The term comes from the Greek “ortho” (meaning straighten) and the Latin “gnathia” (meaning jaw), reflecting its main goal—creating a balanced, properly aligned jaw.

Certain medical conditions, such as cleft palate, sleep apnea or facial injuries, can benefit from this procedure.

In some cases, orthognathic surgery is a choice made for aesthetic reasons to enhance the appearance of the face to improve facial symmetry, boosting confidence and psychological well-being.

Your consultant will take the time to carefully assess your needs, ensuring that surgery is the right decision for you.
