The in depth, individual view of a patient’s facial structure you see in the video adds a new dimension to maxillofacial treatment.
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has existed for 20 years, although modern versions are more sophisticated. A wide range of viewing options and resolutions make the device ideal for maxillofacial use.
Images are produced in three orthogonal planes, which provide linear views and create the 3D outcome. Detail is pronounced, allowing issues raised by general scanning techniques to be investigated.
Being able to see a patient’s anatomy with clarity assists with diagnosis, treatment planning and monitoring. The approach is also safer for patients, with radiation levels lower than standard x-rays, or CT scans.
A Digital Approach
Alongside safety, the system’s beam shaping and targeting abilities aid performance, although automated information processing is the key.
Creation of 3D views from sections is called tomography. In this case carried out by tomographic reconstruction algorithms, creating three dimensional data which can itself be manipulated to improve visualisation.
CBCT scans can be viewed in a wide variety of ways. Through the system, or imported into third party software, for detailed study of hard and soft tissues, or planning surgical procedures.
The immediate comprehension the range of use brings is clear from the video, along with a greater level of precision in experienced hands.
Bringing Solutions
The benefit of accuracy to patients is evident, improved medical understanding. An ability to share this with them is also enhanced by clear imagery.
Whilst no machine can replicate the skills of an experienced consultant, knowing that the problem is clearly understood helps. Giving confidence in actions to be taken and peace of mind.
Artificial intelligence has the potential to take CBCT scans further, through algorithmic identification of anomalies. Finer fields of view are being developed, a greater focus given to imaging enhancements.
Our team are well trained on CBCT scanning and watch developments closely. You can be assured we will remain at the forefront of cone beam scanning and the advantages this brings for all forms of facial treatment.
